"Supramental Consciousness and Human Evolution"
So when we look at Nature’s cycles, we notice some unusual cycles and they all coincide around the present. One of the most dramatic cycles is the cycles of extinction of 64 million years. Every 64 million years, for a reason we do not understand, there is a mass extinction where more than eighty percent of the species are eliminated and there is a dulling of the variety of life forms. And immediately after, a sudden efflorescence of new life forms often much richer. This ‛immediately after’, again in evolutionary terms, could be a span of few thousand years. In 64 million years, that’s a blink.
The last extinction took place exactly 64 million years ago with the extinction of the dinosaurs, and the next one therefore, is due somewhere around now. And ‛now’ in evolutionary terms, again, we can’t say exactly which year – it is not 2012 December 21st… some time in the next five hundred years or thousand years.
There is another interesting cycle which is the Ice Age Cycle. It has a rhythm of about one hundred thousand years; during which the bulk of that period involves a large expansion of ice all over the earth, from the North and the South poles growing towards the Equator. And then, there is a cycle of around a ten thousand years duration, during which the ice recedes and there is a warmer phase. Now, the last receding ice was around ten thousand years ago. Therefore, the next cold period of the ice age is due to start just about now – in the next five hundred years or so.
There is another interesting rhythm of the physical process, the geophysical process of the earth: the magnetic field of the earth flips itself. The North becomes the South; the South becomes the North - suddenly. Again, in geological terms, ‛suddenly’ means within a span of hundred years, not more.
But it is not that the magnetic pole gradually drifts and switches around. It blinks out…fades out… and then switches on again, with the opposite polarity. What makes it happen is still not understood, but we can see the imprint of this change of polarity on earth. And often, before the change of polarity, the magnetic pole of the earth drifts around rapidly. I’m told that, recently it has been seen, that the magnetic pole of the earth is drifting about a kilometre a year, or some distance like that - which is very fast for the whole earth. The last flip of the poles took place a certain number of years ago, and the next one is due now - in the next four hundred years.
All of these cycles involve some kind of destruction… some kind of loss, because the earth magnetic field fades out and there is a barrage of the solar wind upon the earth surface which can lead to the extinction of life. All of these indicate some kind of a drastic physical change around this time. So, it is almost as if Nature has also been preparing all her rhythms for some dramatic change - a leap.
- In what form will that change take place? That’s the question we have to ask. Many people who had been in trance states, somewhat like Edgar Cayce, or who have channelled information, have spoken of dramatic earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, lands going under water, rising out, etc. The Mother herself mentions parts or whole of England going under water, Italy going under water. Elsewhere, to another devotee, she spoke of parts of Indonesia going under water.
All of these indicate dramatic physical changes. But when the Mother was asked, “Will there be such great disasters?” Her general comment was, “The Supramental Manifestation in 1956 has changed everything.”
She said: “First of all, the Supramental Consciousness will work for the most rapid evolution, the smoothest transition, the most harmonious change.” Even if it is through conflict, even if it is through struggle, the extent of conflict and struggle will be minimised by its action, so that we can get across with the least difficulty, even if difficulties are necessary. And so, she said, “Most of these past prophecies of great destruction were either greatly diminished or modified or cancelled. And much of this depends on the state of human consciousness.”
An interesting fact that has been measured physically is that whenever there is a mass connection between human beings in feelings or thought, there is a change in vibration of individual atoms. I have mentioned this on earlier occasions. It is called “the Global Consciousness Project”. It measures the vibrations of certain atoms in a computer, and what we observe is that whenever there is a mass event of people thinking together… feeling together… as after a disaster, there is a reduction in randomness of physical vibrations of all atoms on earth. This shows a close connection between the human consciousness as a species and the physical processes of earth itself. And therefore, it would not be surprising for us when we are told by the mystics and the spiritual teachers that even earthquakes, volcanoes; weather itself is affected by the state of consciousness of human beings - on a collective level. An individual can only affect so much but the collectivity has a great impact.
So, most of these dramatic and perhaps destructive transitions will likely be modified, reduced or will be used if the humanity refuses to change. The Mother gave ample warnings. She said, “If the humanity does not change by choice, then, the change will be forced through the crashing circumstances.”
If, for example, we do not stop the destruction of our environment, then eventually, the environment will be destabilised to such a degree that we would not have enough food for our own survival, and that’s a crashing circumstance. The survival of humanity itself being brought in question by our own stupidity!
But, if we take corrective actions soon enough, then obviously not only will we survive - there is of course the price to pay for the damage already done - but we will create a better synergy with Nature and this will lead perhaps to an even greater harmony for the generations to follow.
That’s a point of choice. The choice centres on what is our priority as humanity: are we going to expend ourselves in moments of satisfaction…of desire and egoistic claim or will we widen our perspective….view the larger humanity and feel our oneness with the whole and with the times to come.
In the last two or three hundred years, there is one prominent philosophy that science has thrown up, which is largely responsible for the problems of today. And that is the idea, that our consciousness is the product of material processes… that our mind and our awareness itself, is a biological side-effect. The conclusion therefore is: “I, who am enjoying my life, will die with the body’s death. If that is the case - and if as science would suggest, we are the result of a freak accident of chance and a product of chance - then…the only meaningful thing to do with life is to make the most of each moment; to satisfy my desires, because after that it doesn’t matter…in any case I’m here by chance, so it doesn’t matter what I do.”
It is this materialist, reductionist philosophy which is at the heart of the present destructive bent of human species.
We have been described - almost in jest but very truly - as a virus on the face of earth; destroying everything, consuming everything.…with no care or concern for sustainability. This is a falsehood of life. But as long as we live by this falsehood, the end result will also be a falsehood. But this very state and perception, this philosophy of life is in direct contradiction to what the Supramental brings upon earth. It is a Consciousness of Truth, a Consciousness of Oneness. And there is nothing in this present mindset of consumptive destruction which offers it support.
There is a pressure, a tension… even a crushing destructive pressure, because the forms of this past have to be destroyed, if they do not change by themselves. There is a struggle therefore between the new consciousness and the old, which is actually the resistance of the old.
You will recall a prayer that the Mother gave to the students: “Make of us the hero warriors that we aspire to become, may we fight successfully the great battle of the future that is to be born against the past that seeks to endure, so that the new things may manifest and we be ready to receive them.”
